The curriculum "Translational Research and Medicine: from the Idea to the Product” is a two-year, job-concurrent continuing education programme that is orientated to natural scientists, physicians, and people from industry and public authorities. As opposed to doctoral candidates, a limited offering of continuing education and qualifications are available to young employees in the first phase after their doctoral thesis. We would like to close these gaps with the aid of the curriculum. We provide them with an offer that will help them to orientate themselves in the broad field of translational health research and to develop an appropriate career pathway.
Through the continuing education programme, competencies are taught to the participants that are fundamentally significant for translational health research. The participants learn to systematically assess the potential of new medical procedures or products for medical application and commercialization. They are provided with an overview over the necessary steps and measures that are required to transition from an idea to a product. They network with the central contact individuals in the region, and they qualify themselves as competent contact individuals in their respective institutions for translational issues. Furthermore, the TRAIN Academy supports the participants with the curriculum by helping them to develop methodologically and personally. Key note lectures given by prominent speakers interlink the modules. On the one hand, the key note lectures expand application opportunities and up-to-date translation topics, while on the other they offer the curriculum members an opportunity to make interesting, cross-regional contacts.

The organisation and content planning are carried out by the TRAIN executive office and the TRAIN Academy Coordination Educational Management. Important content questions and decisions are made by the steering committee whose members are nominated from the circle of individuals responsible for the individual curriculum modules. The steering committee consists of six members. Currently, the following people have been appointed to the steering committee:
Spokesperson for the Steering Committee is Ulrich Kalinke. Assignments for the Steering Committee include content and organisational resolutions. Furthermore, the Steering Committee reports to the Scientific Board for the Curriculum.
The Curriculum for Translational Research and Medicine is advised by the Scientific Board. Members of the Scientific Board are proposed by the steering committee of the TRAIN Academy and confirmed by the assembly of the directors of TRAIN partner institutions. The members are nominated for four years and can be re-appointed once more after expiration of the term of office. Ideally, the expertise of the board covers the areas pharmaceutical industry, university translational research, and medicine, spin-off companies and officials:
Interested guests can take part in 10-15 lectures within the modules 1-10. The participation fee for partners is 300,- €; external participants can also take part for a cost contribution of 600,- €.
The curriculum is a programme for working professionals and can not be funded by the Agentur für Arbeit.
The overall curriculum comprises approximately 460 hours. In order to receive your certificate, we require a total quantity of 250 hours – including rotation and self-study. Each of the modules must also be documented to attain the certificate. The obligatory 250 hours to be achieved can be supplemented by optional courses, transferable skills, key note lectures and coaching and consultation. A GCP basic course (module 7.3) is also a prerequisite for receiving the certificate. Participation in this course occurs through self-organisation.
When physicians take part in continuing education, all events listed in the curriculum can be submitted for recognition with the Lower Saxony medical association. The credits indicated for the modules in the course booklet are based on the recognized credits from the previous year. Please remember to bring your barcodes with you to each event.
